Keeping Tropical Fancy Guppy
Background:The guppy (Poecilia reticulata), is one of the most popular aquarium fish in the world. The Guppy is a member of the Poecilidae family and like all other members of the family, is live-bearing. Guppies are native to Barbados, Brazil, Guyana, Netherlands Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago, the US Virgin Islands, Venezuela
Keeping Guppies:
The male is easy to distinguish from the female because the male is usually more colorful with extremely large caudal fins (tails). The female is usually larger, thicker bodied, with less color and a small caudal fin (tail). It is possible to just keep all male guppies in an aquarium, guppies are generally very peaceful fish.
Guppy fish make good aquarium fish in tropical aquariums, the males in particular have large fantails.
Guppies and platys are very popular fish, this is not surprising when you see the massive variety of colours and patterns they are available in. Although generally not as hardy as they used to be they are still a good fish for the beginner.
Male guppies are much brighter in colour than the females. To avoid babies keep only males. Powerful filters can suck baby fish into the filter therefore breeding fish in aquariums like the biorb is not advisable.
Guppies are generally peaceful, though nipping behaviour is sometimes exhibited between male guppies or towards other top swimmers like platys and swordtails and occasionally other fish with prominent fins such as angelfish.
