Upgrading from a Marine biOrb 30L to a biOrb 60L

Upgrading to the biOrb 60L from a biOrb 30 or biUbe should not be a problem but will take you a week to transfer the content. The most important aspect will be allowing sufficient time for the beneficial bacteria in the new aquarium to build up (this is why it will take 1 week).

This is our recommendation on how you should do this:

Day 1:

Setup the biOrb 60L (Heater Pack will be needed as you will need to heat both aquariums for 1 week) follow the Marine Conversion Kit instructions (adding the Marine Filter Cartridge from the Service Kit and 50% of the ceramic media from the biOrb 60L kit). To be on the safe side, and to ensure the water is the correct salinity (without the need to dechlorinate the water - taking an extra day) we would recommend you use 30L of Salted RO water (available from all good marine stockist). Check the temperature of the biOrb 60L to ensure it is 24 degrees C.

Syphon approximately 10L from the biOrb 30L into the biOrb 60L

Remove the bubble tube from both the biOrb 30L and the biOrb 60L (leaving the filer cartridge in the aquarium). This is important because the water level in both aquariums will be below the height of the bubble tube and will stop the filtration working (you will need to replace the bubble tube after the transfer is complete).

Day 2:

Add two handfuls of the ceramic media from the 30L biOrb into the biOrb 60L

Place all the live rock from your biOrb 30L into the biOrb 60L. We would recommend a total of 3Kg of Live Rock in a biOrb 60L (the ceramic media is more efficient at cultivating beneficial bacteria so only 3kg is needed).

Day 4:

Add another two handfuls of the ceramic media from the biOrb 30L into the biOrb 60L

Day 5:

Add the hermit crab from the biOrb 30L to the biOrb 60L (Place the hermit crab in a bag of water from the biOrb 30L, make sure you float the bag with the hermit crab in the biOrb 60L for 40min. Add a small amount of water from the biOrb 60L every 10min (do this 3-4 times)).

Day 6:

Add the Cleaner Shrimp from the biOrb 30L to the biOrb 60L (Place the cleaner shrimp in a bag of water from the biOrb 30L, make sure you float the bag with the cleaner shrimp in the biOrb 60L. Add a small amount of water from the biOrb 60L every 10min (do this 3-4 times)). PLEASE take your time doing this, shrimps are really susceptible to shock when being moved and can easily die, go slowly. Adding water from the biOrb 60L slowly to the bag will avoid this.

Add two handfuls of ceramic media from the biOrb 30L into the biOrb 60L

Day 7:

Add the fish from the biOrb 30L to the biOrb 60L (Place the fish in a bag of water from the biOrb 30L, make sure you float the bag with the fish in the biOrb 60L, adding a small amount of water from the biOrb 60L every 10min (do this 3-4 times))

Add the remaining ceramic media from the biOrb 30L into the biOrb 60L

Syphon the rest of the water from the biOrb 30L into the biOrb 60L. You should now have 60L of water into the biOrb 60 (30L from the RO water and 30L from the biOrb 30L)

Replace the bubble tube in the biOrb 60L.

After 7 days test you water (either by going to a shop or using a home test kit), you may find the water has some ammonia, if this is the case complete a 25% water change (as per the Marine Conversion Kit instructions).
